Captain Laura Geitz and her Queensland Firebirds are in the spotlight as they will play against a possible record crowd on Sunday in the Australian conference final of the ANZ Championship. The conference topping side will be versing either the NSW Swifts or the West Coast Fever as they both play in the elimination final for a position in the conference final tonight. Geitz and her Firebirds will play their final infront of a 7000-capacity Brisbane Entertainment Centre, as they look too continue their fine form and win their 11th straight match on Sunday to secure a spot in the ANZ Championship Grand Final.
Geitz and the Firebirds have had what can only be described as a dominant season. Anchored by their skipper on the defensive end the Australian Diamonds captain has been leading by example all year and her tenacity, intensity and heart have rubbed off on her team mates.
The Firebirds aren’t a sure thing on Sunday night as both the Swifts and the Fever have caused the Firebirds trouble this season. The firebirds only loss came at the hands of the Fever while in their first matchup with the Swifts the result was a nail biting draw. In their second match up against both teams, the Firebirds were able to bounce back and take care of business. The 1st round loss and draw will still be in the front of their mind when they match up with either team on Sunday as they are fully aware that they have a tough road ahead in order to achieve a second title in their teams history.
Once her ANZ championship campaign is over, Geitz will be gearing up to lead her Australian Diamonds to a possible third consecutive netball World Cup championship in Sydney in August.
