We chat to Laura Geitz about life as captain of Australia’s most successful women’s sporting team.

What inspired you to take up netball?

My sister, Carla,  played netball. She was three years older than me and I went to everything that she did.

Can you talk us through your routine in terms of training and nutrition? How do you stay healthy?

At 6 am I go t to the gym to do strength training for an hour and a half. Then I have breakfast of eggs usually with avocado  or sometimes I have Chia porridge with fresh fruit. I love mangoes when they are in season.

Mid morning I will have some home made (by me) protein balls and a cappuccino with full cream milk.

Lunch is salad or a salad sandwich.

At 4 pm I spend two hours on the court training. Then I have dinner at 7 pm which usually consists of salad and vegies with salmon or another fish or sometimes chicken or read meat.

I never really have treats although I have a sweet tooth. I am coming back from injury so the most I would have is a mango for dessert. I don’t have a lot of dairy.

What’s the hardest thing about being a professional netballer?

The workload and training and managing my body as I get older.

How do you stay motivated? Do you have any motivational words or stories that inspire you?

I do what I love. I don’t need to be motivated because I love it and I am blessed and lucky to be doing this.

Who is your sporting hero?

My mum is a role model. Both my parents are my biggest role models and they both instilled really good values in me.

My sporting hero is Roger Federer. He is humble. Continues to achieve and pushes himself to new limits.

What do you wish someone said to you when you were starting out? What is your advice for girls hoping to play professional sport?

My dad (who has passed away now) said to me “Do your best and forget the rest”. This is the best advice I could have had. My advice is you have to love what you do, it cannot be a task or a burden. When you are challenged is when you learn.

What sorts of changes would you like to see take place in women’s sport? 

Women being recognised more for their sporting prowess. Women’s sport being shown on TV more often and women’s sport being recognised financially. I would love to see more mentoring of  younger players which is why I am really looking forward to being part of the North Sydney Life and Leisure festival as I will be taking a master class for the top local netballers and encouraging them to get the best out of themselves when playing sport and whatever activity they choose to do.
