The Boxing Day Test is earmarked in any cricket fan’s diary, renowned for beautiful summer days, a buzzing Melbourne Cricket Ground and world class cricket.
Despite a new-look squad, Australia have been in red hot form over the past month; dispatching New Zealand in a three game series, before comfortably claiming the first test against the West Indies.
The West Indies haven’t enjoyed their summer quite as much, struggling with a depleted squad and low morale. The visitors barely elicited a bead of sweat from the Aussies in their first encounter of the series.
However, even the most demoralised of sides would struggle not to find passion and determination in the famous Boxing Day Test. The history laden spectacle has inspired some spectacular performances; the West Indies will be looking to defy their critics and bring the Melbourne Cricket Ground to life.
There have been many memorable Boxing Day test performances to draw inspiration from, particularly from some of Spartan’s very own.
In 2012, Spartan ambassador Michael Clarke notched a dominant 106*, leading the Australian side to a massive single innings victory over Sri Lanka.
In 2013, Australia tore apart England thanks to destructive bowling from Spartan ambassador Mitch Johnson, whose Player of the Match performance saw him take 8/88 over two innings.
The 2014 Boxing Day test was a significant occassion for two proud Spartans; it saw the debut of young Australian opener Joe Burns, and also saw the ultimate farewell of Indian superstar M.S. Dhoni. Dhoni took a career record eight catches for the match, in what would be his final outting before retiring from test cricket.
