The Boxing Day Test in Melbourne is a special occasion for all cricketers lucky enough to contest. But for Spartan ambassador Joe Burns, the day has extra significance.

As he walks out onto the Melbourne Cricket Ground, it will mark exactly one year since Joe made his Test debut at the same venue.

Joe had enjoyed a stellar 2014 season playing in the Sheffield Shield, where he scored 439 runs at an average of 55. After an injury to Mitchell Marsh, Joe was called up to the Australian squad. At the time, the Queenslander described his Test selection as one of the proudest moments of his career.

“It took a fair while to sink in. I’m over the moon at the news as it is the best Christmas present I could ever hope for… I’m just so happy.”

Since making his debut, Joe has gone on to play another five Test matches for Australia, averaging 40 runs in his career thus far. He scored his maiden Test century last month, a sublime 129 against New Zealand at the Gabba.

Joe has fought hard to retain his spot in the Australian XI, and we at Spartan would like to congratulate him on this special occasion and wish him the best of luck for the Test!
